One of the best things that comes from childhood is old camp stories shared with family and friends. These outings often progress into adulthood only to be curtailed when the season changes and the air turns colder.

However, just because the weather gets nippy or the ground is covered with snow doesn't mean you have to give up your love of the outdoors and camping. In fact, there are many benefits of winter camping. Familiar camp grounds now take an otherworldly look. The backcountry is quiet and undisturbed. The qualities suitable in a backpacking tent are different from those tents being pitched next to a car in a camping area. The greatest difference being that the backpacking tent will be deported with you and consequently, should be little and lightweight. Most modern two person tents weight about four to five lbs. whereas a spacious family camping tent can weigh twenty lbs or more. Solo or individual person tents can weigh less than three lbs and are great whenever you are hiking alone. Nevertheless, if you are hiking with someone else, it generally works out better weight wise to split the gear and take a two person tent.

Ratings for seasons are usually indicated on packaging, so make sure you pick a four-season tent that's designed with a slope to allow snow to fall off the roof.
