Camping In Michigan

Nature lovers everywhere consider Michigan to be among the most scenic states in the USA. And for good reason. Nestled in the Great Lakes, it's a great state for wilderness lovers with lakes, rivers and forests everywhere you turn. Camping in Michigan is a great way to get to see some of the most beautiful places on earth. Where you camp comes down to what you like and how you like to camp. The good news is that Michigan camping means you will find campgrounds with whatever amenities you are looking for. There are that many to choose from. You'll find everything from the most basic tent only campgrounds without electricity and running water to ones that will handle even the largest of RVs. Looking for a few days in a rustic cabin? You'll find it in Michigan.

Many of the campgrounds are famous around the country, and one of the more popular ones is the Isle Royale National Park. This park is located on North West Lake Superior. This park goes out of it's way to keep humans from impacting the wildlife, flora and fauna. In other words, when you leave there should be no trace that you were ever there. There is no winter camping and of course, no hunting. The impact these stringent rules have is evident when you get a close up view of a moose, a wolf, beaver, otter, eagle, osprey or turtle. The way to the park is by ferry, floatplane or boat. If you want to take a look around you can do so by walking, or by riding in a canoe, kayak or motorboat. Even mountain bikes are prohibited. If this sounds like a bit much, it's a small sacrifice to see the things you'll see here and nowhere else.

And if you're active, you'll find plenty to do. Fishermen and hikers consider this among their favorite destinations. Even divers enjoy this location as there are even wrecks to swim around at the bottom of the lake.

The nights are breathtaking as it is very comon to see the Northern Lights. And the campsites all have their own advantages. Camp in Rock Harbor and you'll enjoy full amenities including showers and restrooms. If you perfer fishing then Chippewa Harbor is the place to be. And if you like to rough it you'll enjoy Chickenbone East. Here you'll find you have to hike to get to the closest water supply.

Another of the so called "no trace" camping in Michigan sites is located on Lake Michigan. Here you'll find Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. And while Isle Royale won't allow you in during the cold winter months, you can certainly enjoy your stay here instead. This makes Sleeping Bear Dunes great for those who enjoy snowshoe hiking or cross country skiing. Horseback riders too will enjoy their stay as this activity is allowed in some areas. And you can get here by car, bus or plane. The entire area consists of the mainland area as well as two islands. There are huge sand dunes (thus the name) as well as inland lakes. This makes it a great place to observe waterfowl like loons and Canadian Geese who love to frequent the area. Michigan campsites here include White Pine or Valley View on the mainland, but there are also sites available on the islands as well.
