How To Buy A Family Tent
There's nothing like packing up the entire family and heading to the woods or the shore for a fun packed family vacation. However, without the proper family tent, things can go quickly and drastically awry.
Kids love to camp, and there are few kids who don't beg for their own little pup tents, especially their first time out. These aren't really meant for anything other than true outdoor professionals or occasional backyard sleepovers. No matter how safe you believe your camp area is, whether it's at the beach or in the woods, safety comes first, and leaving kiddies outside in pup tents is a ticket to disaster.
The tent should be big enough so everyone can sleep comfortably without bumping into someone else. The material should be waterproof and durable. Forget about these flimsy nylon structures. It doesn't take much to poke a hole in it or even blow it over. Choose heavy canvas with high sides and a sloping roof.
Look for tents with breathing holes at the top. These are similar to the breathing holes in a plastic rain jacket under the arms - air can circulate but they are covered lightly with the material. Try to choose one with at least one plastic window which can be covered.
Your door can be either a flap or a zipper, but choose wisely depending on where you camp. Wild animals are experts at sneaking in at night to raid your food supply and even a baby raccoon can manipulate a flap no matter how well it's tied.
It's also a good idea to buy vinyl tarps. One should completely cover your floor, another should be put under the tent, and still another needs to be large enough to cover the entire tent in the event of a downpour.
