Planning Your First Camping Trip

If, like many others, you have been camping with your parents but never on your own, there are a few points to remember when you first strike out on your first camping trip.

Although it may seem like it is frivolous, make sure to check all of your equipment and your tent first. Put the tent up in the yard a week or so before you are due to leave on the trip. This will help you ensure that all of the parts for the tent are there so you can properly assemble it. If it rains water will likely come in through the roof and the floor, so make sure to check for any holes.

Make sure there is not a hole in the inflatable mattress if you are bringing one, whether you have an air mattress or not be sure to bring a sleeping bag and a pillow. Waking up on the ground after falling asleep on an air matress is not fun. Pack an extra blanket in case of cold tempuratures at night.

In case of cooking at the campsite, be sure to bring anything you will need to make a meal. Pack a crate for a fire to grill, 2 small pots, cutlery and anything else you can think of that you will use to cook. Starting a fire every time you want coffee is inconvienant, you should bring a small gas cooker. Consider refilling the gas before you leave. You will also need cleaning materials to wash and dry the dishes.

Make sure nothing has been opened and is sealed tightly to prevent spills of your non-perishable foods. Pack any condiments and spices you like, it is often forgotten. To avoid getting dry food wet, keep liquids in platic bags. Also try to keep all of your food in one general container so you can use it as a pantry during your camping trip. Perishable foods should be kept at a minimum, and packed last, buy any perishable foods you need as you go along.

You may need your own plug for the bath, so invest in a few sizes, also do not forget any other toiletries, including toilet paper. If the campsite has communal ablutions, take plastic thongs to wear in the bathroom. A basket or small bag can be quite useful for travelling to and from the ablutions and helps to avoid dropping your underwear in full view of the entire campsite.

Unless you are camping in a remote spot, most things can be done without until you can get to the local store to buy them. You will be able to relax and enjoy nature if you prepare for a well organized trip.
