Sleeping Bags

When I was a kid I had a lot of sleeping bags. We never went camping as a family, but I still spent a lot of time using them. I wore many out, and that meant that I had to get new ones all the time. I used them so much that my mom didn’t seem to mind buying me a new one when I needed it. They aren’t just for camping, and when you are a child, you can find that they are a toy all on their own. We may not have hiked through the mountains, but I sure found a lot of adventure of my own.

Most of my sleeping bags spent a lot of time doing other things that holding me while I slept. I used to use them to make tents out in our yard that we played in, and in some cases, would sleep in overnight. We would hang the sleeping bags over my mom’s clothesline and pin them together with clothespins. We could use smaller blankets for the sides, and we had a really great tent that doubled as anything from a cave to a fairy tale castle.

The sleeping bags were also a piece of home that I could take with me when I went to stay overnight to a babysitter’s house. I would take my own sleeping bag and my Raggedy Ann doll with me when my mom worked night shift and we stayed with a friend of hers. My brother and I both took our sleeping bags and we kept them there until our mom had a few nights off and we could go home and sleep in our own beds. If I remember correctly, my brother had an Incredible Hulk one for a while, and my favorite was one that featured Strawberry Shortcake.

I also took my sleeping bags with me for an afternoon out with my friends. We would go hang out in a field near where we lived, and it was always perfect to sit on. It was easy to carry around, and it fit in the washing machine when I would get it dirty. My daughter will be getting the first of many sleeping bags she may own this year, and I hope she has as much fun with it as I did when I was her age. Though there are a lot of toys that take the imagination out of play, a good bag can open up new worlds.
