Why survival tips for backpackers? Certainly backpacking may never become a matter of wilderness survival for you, especially if you are careful in your planning. Still, getting lost or twisting an ankle far from any road is always a possibility. In any case, learning a few new things from time to time is a great way to make your trips safer and more interesting. A Few Survival Tips To Remember
You can make snow-block shelters without tools when the conditions are right. I have made trench-shelters of 2 x 3 foot snow-blocks with no tools. I stomped rectangles in the heavily-crusted snow and lifted up the resulting blocks. Stacking them on either side of a trench in the snow, and then across the top for a roof, I was able to make a shelter in twenty minutes.

Among other things, freedom is the ability to go where you want to go, whenever you want to go there. While it is impossible to be truly free - there are places that are simply off limits - the freedom enjoyed by campers is often limited by their equipment and their transportation. If you own a massive RV you might have the luxury of all the creature comforts of home, but it comes at the expense of your freedom.
An RV is limited to the roads it can use, the places it can park, and even the campgrounds it can use. And when it comes to exploring uncharted territory, driving an RV is more than impractical, it is essentially impossible.

You may find it hard to believe but there are some really good lightweight backpacks that weigh less than four ounces. That's no exaggeration. Most bags like this will have a capacity of around 1500 to 1800 cubic inches which will enable you to carry about 15 pounds of equipment. This should be enough for your lightweight sleeping bag, a tarpaulin for some shelter, a basic first aid kit and some energy food. And some water of course.
