Camping Lovers Guide

A camping tent is usually required to enjoy the outdoor recreation of camping, where participants appreciate nature by spending one or more nights in the wild. While some campers elect to stay inside cabins, camping normally involves the use of a tent or tent-like structure for shelter against the elements. Depending on various factors such as environmental conditions, one may also choose to sleep fully out in the open, with nothing more than a sleeping bag or even just a blanket!

Also called a backpacking tent, these shelters are especially necessary for beginners who may not be used to the lack of familiar creature comforts. Most people who camp frequently know they need a weather resistant floor in their tents. Usually, this knowledge is learned the hard way through experience. What are tent footprints and how to select the right one?

One might assume that a tent they just purchased comes with a built-in floor. In fact, many tents do not come with a tent floor. For those that do, they may not have a weather resistant floor. That's where tent footprints come into the picture.

Not only does a tent footprint provide you with protection from the elements such as water penetration into your sleeping surface, they also prolong the life of tents that come with their own tent floor. Footprints are designed to take punishment and much wear and tear.

This all leads to the next question: How does one select the right tent footprint? Actually, it is very simple in many cases. This is because most tent manufacturers make tent footprints as accessories to each of the tents in their lineup. Because of this, you can usually find a footprint custom made for your tent. Just search for the footprint made for the tent you own or are purchasing and it will match perfectly.

In other cases where you need a specifically sized tent footprint for your tent there are many selections available for general tent use. Models such the Eureka Floor Saver line are an example of general purpose tent footprints that you can purchase.

When fitting a footprint to your tent you want to make sure it meets the following criteria. 1) The footprint must have the correct dimensions to cover the entire floor size or your tent. You want it to be large enough so that when you fasten it to the ground, it protrudes slightly from the tent floor outline. 2) The footprint must have a rugged and easy-to-use fastening system. Usually, you'll find a stake and ring system. 3) This is a personal preference item, but make sure the footprint has a color that compliments the tent interior.

Camping is a great outdoor activity that can be enjoyed both by couples, a group of friends or by the entire family. The following are some tips for beginners about how to prepare for their camping trip.

Most first-time campers usually being their foray into camping as tent campers or car campers since all their camping equipment is loaded into their car (instead of an RV). Uppermost on their list of things needed would obviously have to be a tent. They don't have to choose and expensive tent as long as it provides adequate weather protection and shields the campers from natural elements such as the wind, sun, and rain. You also need a secure tent that can keep you away from flies, mosquitoes and other pests. Your tent will also be, in all likelihood, your best place for privacy and where you will store your clothes and camping gear to keep them safe from the weather.

Have you ever noticed that we are more likely to do things as adults that we were exposed to as children? This seems to hold true for a number of activities. Even if we do try new things as adults we may not be as comfortable doing them as we are doing the things that we grew up doing. For example my husband grew up in a family that hunted, fished and spent a great deal of time in the woods and on the lake. Being outdoors to him is second nature.

I grew up out in the country on a farm. We did not do a great deal of hunting but my dad did take us fishing a few times a year. Being outside was something we had to do in order to get the work done on the farm. My mother had a huge garden that we helped tend and we helped with the crops and cattle. Occasionally we would pitch a tent in the backyard, but we never did any formal camping. When we got married my husband and I began taking many camping trips. I had done some camping in college and found that I really enjoyed it. One we had our children we decided we wanted to introduce them to camping also. We went looking for a family camping tent. The one that we had just would not be comfortable for more than two people. When we camped as a couple we had noticed different family camping tents in the campsites.

We found a great family camping tent at one of the major sporting goods stores in our area. The tent actually had rooms that you could add on to it. When you entered the tent there was an opened space that was large enough to accommodate a folding camp style picnic table. We already had this. It folds into a suit case. It is perfect if it is raining you can set it up inside the tent. This space could also hold gear that you did not want outdoors over night. There were then two separate areas that had a tent wall in-between and a fold down flap to provide privacy for getting dressed. So the family camping tent was accurately a three room tent. There was the capability of zipping up a third wall within the front space to create a fourth room. We liked that the inside rooms had drop down walls that could be tied back or left closed rather than being zipped. Opening and closing that many zippers would have been annoying for anyone trying to sleep and also zippers with kids have a tendency to get caught or break. We are glad that we are raising our kids to enjoy the outdoors.
