Camping Tents – The Involved Components

Whether hiking or camping, camping tents are essential. They provide shelter from the weather and insects and can turn a trip out in the wild into a moderately comfortable stay. They're designed for thousands of situations from large, several person tents with heavy, strong materials to small, one-man tents with lightweight, collapsible materials. Getting the right one is key to making the most of your trip and it should always be the first thing on your checklist after food.

Tent Parts

The main material that makes up the tent is always waterproof. For double-skin tents, this is the outer layer, while the inner layer is mesh. The waterproof layer provides protection against rain and other liquids, but will allow condensation to leave the tent to prevent it building up inside. While not perfect, this can be improved with ventilation.

Lightweight Tents – How Light?

Why use lightweight and ultralight tents? Because a heavy tent is one of the biggest obstacles to lightweight backpacking. You have to cut the weight of the big three (shelter, backpack and sleeping bag) to really go light. How do you choose one, though? Start by asking yourself the following questions:

1. Are you claustrophobic? Some ultralight tent designs are really just fancy bivy sacks. For those who hate tight squeezes, it will be like sleeping in a coffin.

2. How tall are you? If the length of the tent is only a few inches more than your height, you'll be touching the walls. This probably means getting wet from the condensation on them.

3. What do you do in a tent? If you just sleep, total floor and head space are not important. If you normally play cards with friends for hours, you'll need a design that allows for that.

Winter Camping For Newbies

One of the best things that comes from childhood is old camp stories shared with family and friends. These outings often progress into adulthood only to be curtailed when the season changes and the air turns colder.

However, just because the weather gets nippy or the ground is covered with snow doesn't mean you have to give up your love of the outdoors and camping. In fact, there are many benefits of winter camping. Familiar camp grounds now take an otherworldly look. The backcountry is quiet and undisturbed. Moreover, winter camping often gives people a confidence boost due to the level of self-sufficiency required.

Important Tips for Winter Camping Shelter

While most people think of camping as being an exclusive summer activity, camping during colder months can be an adventure to experience. While warmer-weather camping pretty much only involves packing a bag of clothes, filling a cooler and tossing the tent in the car, winter camping does require some extra preparation.

The camping equipment and clothing available today for cold-weather situations is exceptional for staying warm and dry, but knowing how to deal with snow, ice and storms is important for winter camping, as much as being prepared for rain and lightening is during summer vacations.

The most important thing to consider when planning a winter camping trip is shelter. The elements during cold weather can be extremely harsh, and a good shelter can mean the difference between risky danger and a great experience. The tent you choose for winter camping has to be strong and solid to withstand snow and wind. Ratings for seasons are usually indicated on packaging, so make sure you pick a four-season tent that's designed with a slope to allow snow to fall off the roof.

The Backpacking Tent – A Campers Best Friend

Back-packing tents, tents designed in particular for walkers and backpackers, may possibly be a backpacker's best mate.

Some may believe otherwise. A lot of swift and light walkers are relying on bivy bags to keep themselves cozy, nesting their sleeping bags within water resistant bags and eschewing a tent all together. These weight watchers frequently wake up inside sleeping bags doused with condensation, whether or not the sky was clear all night long.

Other walkers spend the nighttime under ultra light tarps or inside hammocks, but when it starts to rain, a lot of them discover themselves flooded out, all too thrilled to share your dry, water-resistant tent.

Construction from nylon shells and fiberglass or carbon-fiber poles mean that today's tents are smaller and lighter than before. These poles, mixed with color-coded snaps on the tent body, mean that the majority of tents can be put up by one person in seconds, even if that one individual is stumbling into camp in the dark as it is starting to drizzle. The rain flies of current back packing tents are waterproofed and seam-sealed, so you will not wake up at 3am to that tell-tale drip-drip-drip of a leaking seam. They are ventilated too, permitting the dampness and condensation from your breath to hold outside and avoid wet tent walls in the morning.
