Camping Lovers Guide

One of the fondest childhood memories I have are camping with my dad. My dad and I would grab our tent, sleeping bags and fishing poles and head down to a local lake for a weekend. Camping can be a wonderful activity for the entire family. It can also become a huge calamity if you are not prepared or don’t know what to expect.

If you are not experienced at camping then it might be best to start with a commercial campground. These campgrounds are often listed in the yellow pages. The costs of these campgrounds is often nominal and they usually have showers, bathrooms, electrical hookups, running water nearby, fire pits and a camp store for any necessities that you may have forgotten. Established commercial campgrounds also often have activities for the entire family including swimming pools, hiking trails, paddle boats and fishing lakes. Although most of these campgrounds are set up for campers they almost at always have tent sites as well.

The Ohio River is a majestic natural waterway that feeds into the Mississippi River. Beginning in southwestern Pennsylvania, the Ohio River winds along the borders of Ohio West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana for 981 miles, offering plenty of peaceful and scenic areas that are perfect for camping and enjoying the abundant river activities. Camping on the Ohio River is fun for all types of campers, with campgrounds and state parks scattered all along the river, each offering their own selection of amenities and activities.

Forked Run State Park, located in the charming southeastern Ohio hillsides, is the perfect destination for a weekend spent camping on the Ohio River. The park campground features 81 RV sites with electrical hookups, as well as 71 tent campsites, all with breathtaking views of the valley. Visitors can access Forked Run Lake with small motorboats (no larger than 10HP), as well as with canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats. The park also offers boating access to the Ohio River. Guests can swim and relax on the sandy 400 feet beach, hike and explore one of three hiking trails, or enjoy the excellent fishing on the Ohio River.

One of the greatest experiences for family bonding is a camping trip. By leaving all the electronics at home for a few days, you and your family are forced to spend time getting to know one another once again.

While a camping trip can be a lot of work it can also be a lot of fun. Cooking over a campfire or even with a camp stove is quite different than using the microwave at home. The results may be quite different than the microwave stuff you cook at home. Maybe you will discover you really like the taste of food that is cooked over a real fire. Since there is not a dishwasher, you will have to wash some dishes by hand even if you choose to use disposable forks and plates.

People go camping more frequently during the summer because they know they have all of the outdoor camping essentials they need in the storage shed at home. Some groups might head out with less equipment than others might but since camping essentials are meant to take care of basic needs, people know they have enough equipment on hand to remain at a campsite for a day or two without feeling a need to go home because they are hungry or cold.

Outdoor camping essentials such as heaters would only used at campsites in the backyard or in camping spaces at recreation areas that have camping spaces equipped with electrical hookups. Due to safety precautions, an outdoor heater is unsuitable during the rainy season, but it will take the chill out of the air and warm the interiors of tents that surround the campsite. Most campers rely on fire pits to keep warm and consider these camping essentials as an alternate way to cook meals too. When fire pits are lit, other camping essentials such as a fire extinguisher should be within reach at all times.
