How to choose the best hiking shoes

There are several important aspects to take into account when planning a hike yet one of the most crucial components to contemplate is the hiking shoes. Choosing the most appropriate footwear will be sure to make or break the success of your trip so it is crucial that you pair the right set of hiking shoes with your hike. A light-weight and flexible shoe is ideal for a short and easy day trip over a well trodden and easier route but will leave your feet hurting and you could slip or twist an ankle if trekking through harsh and unstable ground over a prolonged period, yet a sturdy and well supportive pair of boots may well be overkill on a light and easy expedition but it will provide you with all-day comfort and support on a hike up the side of a mountain.

Here are some questions you should consider when buying your next pair of hiking shoes:

What terrain will you be hiking on? Are you going to be walking well-worn paths, bushwalking, mountain or gorge walking or rough unchartered terrain? Will there be steep hillsides or mountains, and will you need waterproofing for crossing streams? Are you likely to be hiking through rough dry desert, or are you going to be hiking through deep wet rainforest?

How long is your trip? Are you going on short day-trip or a multi-day camping excursion?

What will the weather do? Will it be hot, dry and dusty or are you hiking through wet sodden pastures? This would determine whether you will need light and breathable hiking shoes or a pair which can keep your feet dry!

How much weight will you be carrying? Are you going to require added support from your hiking shoes for your heavy rucksack as well as other gear you will be carrying or are you travelling light with just a daypack?Heavier, more robust hiking boots can provide more support to you compared to lightweight hiking shoes when you're carrying heavy backpacks jam-packed with your backpacking gear.

Do you need to have good ankle support? Rough loose ground or level easy trails? Hiking shoes with insufficient ankle support can easily leave you with an injury if the terrain is rough and unpredictable but a highly supportive boot might be overkill and be unnecessarily bulky if you don't plan on going off the beaten track.

How often are you going to use your new hiking shoes? Do you plan just one or two hikes per year or are you an avid walker who wants long lasting strength from your hiking shoes or boots? Whilst a solid pair of hiking boots will undoubtedly be with you for a long time whatever your level, you need to consider the amount of use you will get out of your new pair before over-spending on a massively sturdy boot if you are only going to use them twice a year but on the other hand, if you happen to underspend on a lower price and not as trusty pair then they can easily deteriorate pretty quickly if you take them out on an overnight hike every weekend.

Make sure you choose the Best Hiking Shoes or the Best Hiking Boots for your next hike and make it a hike to remember.

What You Need to Survive Outdoors

Why I practice bushcraft & survival

I'm a keen camper, but I'm certainly not as hardy as the likes of Ray Mears or Bear Grylls. For me it's fair weather all the way.

But a few of my tougher camping buddies were discussing what they would need, as a minimum, in order to spend a few nights outdoors at this time of year in the UK (its springtime and still very cold at night).

We concluded that the bare essentials would consist of shelter, somewhere warm to sleep and the means to create fire and find food and water. So the outcome of the beer fuelled conversation has been the challenge for us to spend two days and nights surviving and sleeping outdoors.
