Cheap Backpacks

Cheap backpacks can be made, but I don't recommend it. Unless you are extremely skilled at sewing, it isn't likely to come out like you want. Also, even if you are an expert, it will probably take less of your time to pick up an extra day at work and buy a pack with the earnings.

On the other hand, if you have an old backpack frame, you can make a cheap backpack with it. Remove the old pack, and tie a plain nylon duffel bag to it firmly, with the zipper facing out. Small bungee cords will work for attaching it too. I did this using an old aluminum frame that still had straps and a waist belt, and for the cost of a $15 duffel bag, I had an external-frame backpack that not only held a lot, but weighed just two pounds.

Ultralight Sleeping Bags

Why ultralight sleeping bags? Because ultralight backpacking is only made possible by cutting the weight of the big three; the backpack, shelter and sleeping bag. The days of five-pound summer bags are gone - at least for those of us who prefer to go light.

One Pound Ultralight Sleeping Bags

There are several one-pound ultralight sleeping bags on the market now. My own is 17 ounces. It actually weighs 19 ounces with the stuff sack, but stuff sacks aren't always necessary. It can be stuffed directly into my pack or put in a half-ounce bread bag. It's a down sleeping bag, and has kept me warm down to below freezing - warmer, in fact, than my four-pound bag used to keep me.

continued below.......

It appears fragile, and I've babied it over the years, but it may be tougher than I thought. I've used it from sea-level to 16,000 feet, in all types of weather, usually camping under a tarp, yet it still has its loft, and it appears almost new. The zipper goes only half-way down, to save weight, and it's a mummy bag, but I'm 6'3, 165 pounds, and I've always been comfortable in it.

Getting The Right Sleeping Bag

Going camping? Need to buy a sleeping bag? Here are a few tips to help you select the best one to fit your needs.

Shape / Design

One of the first factors to consider is the shape and design of the sleeping bag. A standard sleeping bag is a simple rectangle, usually with a zipper running up one side. The second primary design is the mummy bag, which is designed to fit the shape of the body. This allows it to more efficiently retain body heat. There are also variations of the two major design shapes, designed for various purposes.

Fill / Insulation

Sleeping bags are usually filled with down, or some synthetic material. Down filled sleeping bags are generally warmer, and more expensive. Synthetic sleeping bags are generally less expensive than down filled bags, and perform much better in wet conditions. The do not readily absorb water, and still offer some insulation even when they do.

Things to Consider for Backpacking Sleeping Bags

Nothing is more wonderful then backpacking, camping, or hiking but when sleeping outdoors backpacking sleeping bags become the most important purchase.  The purchase would be based on the type of weather expected, helping you choose between a down fill or synthetic bag.  With the right purchase, you would find your next backpacking trip enjoyable, regardless of the weather.

Backpacking sleeping bags are made with ratings for outside temperature.  Therefore, based on the lowest temperature for the outdoor experience you will have, backpacking sleeping bags should be rated to handle 10 degrees cooler.  That way, you would stay toasty warm with the design of the bag retaining heat while also keeping cold air out.  This means you want to avoid buying a sleeping bag with too much space.

The goal is looking at backpacking sleeping bags that fit relatively snug to the body so there is not as much room inside to be heated.  Then, for better heat retention, it would be best to have a zipper that could be pulled up easily and quickly.  The market is full of backpacking sleeping bags with unique comfort levels and weights.  A great example would be spending time outdoors where there is high humidity, a situation where a synthetic bag would be best.

If you are a first time camper, and you want to make sure that you are not forgetting those special things that will make your life easier in your trip. Check these top eight things a camper must not forget, when going camping.

Tent
We know this one is already on your list but just in case, remember that whatever tent you choose, it should absolutely adapt to weather conditions. Check out the size and how easy it is to assemble. You do not want to spend hours figuring out where the poles go. If your trip includes a walking trip, and you are going to be carrying your tent around make sure it is not too heavy for you. Your tent should be comfortable and safe. It should have protected seams, waterproof floors, zipper protection and it should be very resistant.
